A pivotal meeting was convened with the nine authors behind the compelling essays comprising the book "Narrar lo Propio, Mexican Migrants in Chicago."

March 11, 2024

This collaborative endeavor which culminated in the publishing of a book had been nurtured over several months through the concerted efforts of UNAM Chicago, the Directorate of Literature at UNAM, and the visionary leadership of Sylvia Aguilar, who adeptly helmed the writing workshop for the participants.

This gathering also marked our first formal encounter with Julia Santibañez, the newly appointed Director at Literatura UNAM who succeeded Anel Perez, who recently assumed the Directorship at the Center for Teaching of Foreigners (CEPE) at UNAM. Alongside Guillermo Pulido, Director of UNAM Chicago, Perez had been instrumental in conceiving this relevant and innovative university literary project, which focused on immigration, particularly the experiences of Mexican immigrants in Chicago.

During the meeting, poignant testimonies resonated as the authors lauded UNAM's commitment to amplifying their voices and providing a platform for their narratives. They pledged to continue collaborating on diverse initiatives aimed at furthering their contributions to their adopted country.

The book will be presented at the International Book Fair in Chicago on May 3rd, a testament to the enduring significance of these nine authors and their stories and the invaluable role of UNAM in fostering a constant dialogue and the dissemination of culture.
