Faced with the immense challenges that the City of Chicago is experiencing in the area of migration and driven by a desire to learn about the diagnostics and studies conducted by our university, Chicago’s Deputy Mayor for Immigrant, Migrant, and Refugee Rights, Beatriz Ponce de León, visited UNAM. During her visit, she held substantive meetings that opened possible avenues for cooperation with various entities addressing these issues.
Among the meetings the Deputy Mayor met with our Vice provost for International Affairs William Lee, who provided her with a broad overview of the university's activities, particularly the academic units, institutes, and seminars focused on migration studies. During her visit, Ponce de León also took the opportunity to visit the offices of the University of Illinois System (UIS), housed within UNAM.
Deputy Mayor Ponce de León emphasized the importance of her visit to UNAM as “a great opportunity to be seized in the search for solutions to the major challenges faced by large cities, such as migration, and because the university is a fundamental source of knowledge.”
The Deputy Mayor was accompanied by Alberto Foncerrada, the Cultural and Inter-institutional Liaison at UNAM Chicago, who, along with the Office of International Affairs team, prepared the program for the visit.
