Apr 8, 2025

With the Opening of the “Oaxaca Firme” exhibit featuring the photography of Kim Potowsi, last week we celebrated the kick off of our Oaxaca Month or “Ciclo Oaxaqueño”, consisting on showcasing the richness, the beauty, the values and the culture of one of Mexico´s most beautiful states.

The exhibit was inaugurated by Deputy Consul General of Mexico, Gerardo Guerrero, who praised Potowski’s work. The exhibition consisting of 25 black and white beautiful photos, each one telling a compelling story, will remain open throughout the 25th of April.

During her remarks Ms. Potowski thanked UNAM Chicago for allowing her to display her work, which will be travelling to Oaxaca this upcoming summer. As the photographer describes it, “the word firme in the exhibition title honors the strength of Oaxacans, including indigenous ways of life, language, dress, and practices that have survived over 500 years of Western onslaught”.

The Ciclo Oaxaqueño is also made up of a second event consisting of a conversation between Kim Potowski and UIC professor Dianna Freed under the title “Street photography and Gentrification” which will be held April 24th at 2 pm and a couple of workshops on Printmaking by Maestro Conhg Lopez, from Milwaukee which will take place the following day on the 25th.
