Students from the University of Illinois at Chicago take Spanish and Art courses at UNAM

Jun 3, 2024

From May 19 to June 13, 2025, students from the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) are participating in a four-week study abroad program titled Revolutionary Art and Language in Mexico City, developed in close collaboration with CEPE UNAM (Centro de Enseñanza para Extranjeros, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México).

This program blends Spanish language instruction with an in-depth exploration of Mexican visual art, history, and contemporary social issues. Through coursework and site visits, students will engage with the works of Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and other major muralists while critically examining themes such as migration, gentrification, and sustainability.

Tailored for beginner and intermediate Spanish learners, the program connects language acquisition with cultural immersion and social engagement, allowing students to earn 6–7 academic credit hours.

This initiative reflects a strong partnership between UIC and UNAM, enhancing students’ global awareness through academic and cultural collaboration.
