With UNAM as one of the five universities that took part, the symposium “Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities, Challenges, and Multidisciplinary Collaboration” was held to discuss the impact of AI in various fields of research, as well as in public life — from healthcare systems and agriculture to language technologies and social media.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. Timothy Killeen, President of the University of Illinois System, who praised the gathering as an excellent example of collaboration and a valuable opportunity to explore multidisciplinary applications and opportunities in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
Dr. Elvira de Mejía, Director and Founder of I-MMAS (Initiative for Mexican and Mexican-American Students) of the University of Illinois System, welcomed the twelve participating speakers and noted that the symposium had nearly one thousand registered participants from Mexico and various countries across Latin America and Europe.
Topics discussed at the symposium included the use of AI to assess bicycle travel safety in Chicago, the role of language engineering in social media, AI tools to assist in diagnosing oral cancers, ways in which machine learning can improve smart agriculture, and considerations regarding the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence.
In addition to UNAM, other participating institutions included the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV) of the National Polytechnic Institute, the University of Guadalajara, the Autonomous University of Querétaro, the Autonomous Metropolitan University, and the three campuses that make up the University of Illinois System.
