With the aim of internationalizing the knowledge produced by the research centers, institutes, and graduate programs of the participating universities, and of promoting a multidisciplinary space that fosters collaboration networks in teaching and research, the 3rd Colloquium on Migration and Indigenous Peoples was held on October 9 and 10, this time hosted by the Institute of Anthropological Research (IIA) of UNAM.
The Inauguration was led by Dr. César Villalobos, Director of the IIA; Dr. Tamara Ruíz, Secretary of Institutional Development at UNAM; and Dr. William Lee, Vice provost for International Affairs at the university. Dr. Elvira de Méjia, representing the University of Illinois System, and Dr. Juan Carlos Barrón, Director of the Center for Research on North America (CISAN), also participated.
UNAM Chicago took part in the panel titled “Migrant Experience in Chicago,” where Alberto Foncerrada, Liaison for Inter-institutional and Cultural Affairs, presented the latest developments of the UNAMAcción Migrante platform in Chicago. He shared the panel with Maya Piña, director of the publishing house El BeiSmAn PreEss, and Dr. Héctor García, professor at Loyola University.
Chicago’s presence at the conference was further highlighted by a keynote lecture by Dr. Claudia Brittenham, Director of the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Chicago, titled “Migration in Mesoamerica: A Millennia-Old Tradition.” Additionally, the panel “Chicago Monuments Project: Contributions of Migrant Women in Pilsen” was held, featuring Professor Hinda Seif (University of Illinois Springfield), Delilah Salgado (Chicago Public Art Group), artist Diana Solís, and Teresa Magaña (Pilsen Arts and Community House).
